Ready for Summer

I am ready for a much needed break. I love the summer time. Not sure if I will get much time off because I will be working all summer 40 hours + a week to make sure I can afford to come back. next year. The plan for next year is to take 16 credits in the fall 5 in the winter and start student teaching in the spring. I hope to teach high school and elementary school for student teaching. After student teaching I plan on getting my TEFL certification. I would like to teach somewhere abroad and I would love to do 6 month contracts and move around every six months. I want to see the world and learn some new things myself. I would love to eventually teach in Oregon someday. I love Oregon and the Oregon coast and would love to teach there one day. This is the game plan. I guess I will see what happens.

Synectic model not really for P.E. but I like it!

I really had a hard time with this model because it is not really a P.E. model. It is more of a creative open for discussion kind of model. In P.E. it is a brief 35 minute class period so time is an issue. The kids are not there to sit down and creatively think about health topics. I did have a lot of fun working with the class when participating in others synectic model. It was fun to think about things in others ways. I liked how we broke down traditional schemas into new creative ideas. I really enjoyed these lessons. If  I were to teach synectics it would probably be for a health topic. I had a really hard time coming up with a lesson but it was pretty interesting to me.

Teaching using the simulation model

I thought the simulation model was extremely useful. I used the simulation model to cover the controversial topic of smoking and tobacco. It demonstrates what it would be like to have emphysema while working out. It uses comparison between breathing after exercise and breathing after exercise with emphysema. It provides an opportunity for kids to understand what it might be like to have a respiratory problem while doing physical. It is kind of a scare tactic. It works to help the kids understand the problem so they realize they don’t wan that to happen I really liked teaching this lesson for the class. The class seemed to really like this lesson. They all were pleased with the simulation with the straw because it was a shock mystery factor. They were not sure were I was going until they were participating in the simulation. I think the lesson went really well. This type of lesson could be like the checking for understanding and the key to having kids remember all the information because of the wow or shock factor. I think it would be a great way to have the kids leave with something that is memorable and repeatable.

Problem Based Model

I did several models and I mentioned my favorites and I forgot the problem based model. I remember as a kid doing this model. I did not know what model was but I remember doing this one. It too is one of my favorite models.  This model I chose a game called ship to shore. It has the students ship wrecked on an island with two islands they must get to to get home safe to shore. They have rules that only allow them to travel two at a time and then use some basic throwing ad catching skills to transfer a ball back to the original island or he previous one. I really liked this model with this game because kids love to pretend. This allows them to pretended stuck on an island and problem solve and work together. I really liked this model for this particular lesson. I am sure there are several other lessons I could use with this model.

Blog about teaching

So as for this class I found it extremely helpful. I had no ideas what models there were and which ones would even suit me. In P.E. the direct model is probably the most widely used because it gets the kids playing quicker. I think when you only have 35 minutes the key for teaching models is speed. I do really like the syntectic model and the simulation model. The synectic model would probably not be used in the P.E. setting it would probably be more likely used in a english setting. It would probably be used for a class that the student is asked to be creative and think outside the box. I might use it for a beginning lesson for P.E. if I wanted the kids to open their minds and explore a topic.  The simulation model I liked a lot. I would use this strategy quite often. It seemed to be the easiest way to demonstrate any topic first hand to the kids. I think there was a few other models I liked but the direct, simulation and synectic model were my favorite. The synectic I liked because it was fun for me to learn that way. I just enjoyed work with my classmates and seeing what they thought. Sometimes I started to understand or view things from another side because I was listening to what others said when thinking about a certain word. ……..Overall I had fun in this class.

Trying!

Well I am still not much of a blogger but I am attempting to do so. I am about to work on some of my lessons to get my ten. I think this blog thing could be a good thing to get into for teaching. Although I don’t really even face book because I am not really interested in the whole cyber world. I went out to see Alex the other day and it was fun. He has a pretty full plate with all the stuff he is doing. Once he completes some of his tasks he will make P.E. run much smoother in the caldwell school district. I imagine all districts will follow suit eventually if they have not done so already. Well back to Homework…….

Working on getting some posts up

So I am never sure of what to blog about. I met with my lead teacher this week. He is a great teacher and seems to me to know where he is going. I wish I knew what the future has for me in the teaching field. I am getting a little lost in my classes. Teaching to me has become more of a Journey that I am not in control of. I want to start taking the reins of my journey and start teaching. Not sure where or when I will be teaching but I hope it is soon. My lead teacher manages to handle the stuff that is not fun or rewarding with such grace. I need to work on that. Taking a situation with a grain of sand is something teachers need to really be good at.
